Welcome and thank you for inquiring about my practice.
As a counselor, I am a hybrid. I have worked in a university and a community counseling center, managed a private counseling practice and directed The University of Texas at Austin's Career Center. At times, I refer to myself as a career therapist and a psychotherapist. I have had the privilege of working with clients for over 25 years.
As a career counselor I enjoy working with individuals who want help figuring out what they REALLY want to do, career-wise. In my experience, there are two major reasons a person gets stuck:
1) People are often not aware of the many possible career options. (There are over 12,000 job titles out there!) I consider myself a career 'nerd' and regularly read about labor market trends. Part of my role will be to help you to quickly and reliably access current career information.
2) Another reason people aren't sure what they want to do is because of a barrier. Sometimes an obstacle is external (e.g., difficult economic times) and sometimes, it is internal (e.g., self-confidence). Occasionally, it is both.
As a counselor, my clients have described me as encouraging, empathetic, and knowledgeable. Occasionally, I add a touch of humor. The primary philosophy and focus from which I work is that I:
*see you, the client, as the driver.
*use the therapeutic relationship as part of the process.
*explore the impact that family, culture, and identity has upon your mental health.
*identify what you can do on your own to augment your counseling.
After you review my website, I invite you to call me and we can discuss what you need and how I might be of assistance.
